KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal shooting late Wednesday night near East 10th Street and Prospect Avenue as 37-year-old Ashton Hams, a Kansas City resident whose life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that has left the community reeling.
According to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found Hams suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency crews, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported hearing several shots fired in rapid succession, followed by a vehicle speeding away from the area. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood overnight, gathering witness statements and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to identify a suspect. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been announced.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. Anonymous tips may lead to a reward.
A Growing Concern in Kansas City
Hams’ death adds to Kansas City’s rising number of homicides this year, a crisis that has prompted calls for action from city leaders, community advocates, and local residents. Many say that beyond policing, long-term solutions must include greater investment in youth programs, jobs, mental health services, and resources to break cycles of generational trauma.
“We lost another son, another brother, another friend last night,” said Rev. Leonard Smith, a neighborhood pastor and anti-violence advocate. “We cannot keep burying our people and calling it normal. Ashton Hams had a name, a story, and people who loved him.”
Remembering Ashton Hams
While his family has not yet spoken publicly, neighbors recalled Hams as a quiet man who mostly kept to himself. Some remembered him from his childhood in the area, while others noted he had recently returned after time away. His death leaves a painful void for those who knew him, underscoring the human toll behind the city’s crime statistics.
The busy 10th and Prospect corridor, where the shooting occurred, has long struggled with violence despite efforts at revitalization. Residents say the tragedy is another reminder of the urgent need for both safety and opportunity in the community.
As the investigation continues, Kansas City mourns the loss of Ashton Hams — a life cut short far too soon.
