It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Swincicki, 57, and his wife, Michelle Terwilliger, 55, who tragically lost their lives in a house fire in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood early Sunday morning, September 21, 2025.
The couple, who had been together since 2010, were found inside their home on East 52nd Street after firefighters responded shortly after midnight to a blaze that engulfed the first floor and front porch of the residence. Both William and Michelle were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center in critical condition but were later pronounced deceased.
The Cleveland Division of Fire reported that hoarding conditions inside the home made rescue efforts extremely difficult, obstructing pathways and slowing search operations. Additionally, investigators discovered that no working smoke alarms were present in the home at the time of the fire — a factor that may have delayed detection and escape.
Neighbors and friends have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the couple, describing them as well-known and cherished members of the community. Their sudden passing has left a lasting impact on all who knew them.
The fire remains under active investigation. The Cleveland Division of Fire urges residents to check their smoke alarms and take preventative safety measures to avoid similar tragedies.
