MIDLAND, Texas–Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a teenage boy in critical condition Thursday morning in Midland.
According to officials, the shooting happened near C Street and Indiana Avenue. Responding officers quickly secured the area, and a suspect was taken into custody. Police also confirmed that a weapon connected to the shooting has been recovered.
The injured teen was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Officials have not released his name or further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Out of an abundance of caution, Midland High School was placed under a Secure status for a period of time following the incident, though the shooting occurred off campus. District leaders said the decision was made to ensure the safety of students and staff while police investigated. The Secure status was lifted after officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Midland ISD praised the swift response of district and campus leaders in protecting students during the situation.
The investigation is still active, and authorities have not released additional information at this time.
