ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA — Virginia State Police have confirmed that 36-year-old Abdiqadir Ahmed Nur of Shakopee, Minnesota, was the victim of a fatal multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 81 near mile marker 181 on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
The crash, which occurred around 5:08 p.m., involved six tractor-trailers, two passenger vehicles, and a medical transport van. Authorities confirmed there was no patient on board the medical transport at the time. Nur, who was wearing his seatbelt, died at the scene after his vehicle collided with several tractor-trailers in a chain-reaction pileup during heavy rainfall.
Multiple other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the medical transport van, who suffered serious injuries, was transported by ground to Rockbridge Community Hospital after weather conditions prevented helicopter transport.
Hazardous materials teams responded to contain fuel spills, and VDOT established detours to Route 11 to ease traffic congestion. All northbound lanes were reopened by 1:00 a.m. Friday.
Investigators say the crash was triggered by vehicles slowing for an earlier two-vehicle accident, which led to the chain-reaction collision. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution in adverse weather and remain alert to changing road conditions.
