It is with deep sorrow that we share the tragic loss of Annie Ruth Buggs, 54, of Bernice, and Deandrea Perez Ford, 41, of Homer, who both passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in a drowning incident along the banks of Dorcheat Bayou south of Shongaloo, Louisiana.
According to Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker, the pair were on what appeared to be a routine fishing outing near a boat launch off Bobby Davis Road when the tragedy occurred. Evidence at the scene suggests that one of the individuals fell into the water, and the other entered in a courageous attempt to save them. Sadly, neither could swim.
Sheriff Parker noted, “We cannot be sure which of them fell into the water. We found a chair in the water and another still on the bank. It’s just a tragic event.” Emergency responders, including deputies from the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office and fire departments from Springhill, Cotton Valley, and Sarepta, responded swiftly to the call, recovering the bodies with the assistance of the Springhill dive team.
Both Annie and Deandrea were sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, for autopsy, with results expected in about two weeks. Authorities are extending heartfelt condolences to their families and ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Annie Ruth Buggs and Deandrea Perez Ford will be remembered for their lives, their loved ones, and the tragic bravery that marked their final moments. May they rest in peace.
