Roommate Dispute Ends in Fatal Shooting; Caleb Murphy Charged with Murder

Authorities have charged 25-year-old Caleb Murphy in connection with the fatal shooting of his roommate, 25-year-old Jacob Volkert, on Sunday. The incident occurred at a residence in the 4300 block of Eminence Boulevard, where both men lived.

According to court documents, Murphy admitted to officers that he shot Volkert after a dispute over refusing to leave his room. Investigators confirmed that Volkert was unarmed and did not threaten Murphy at the time of the shooting. Murphy told police that despite the lack of threat, he opened fire when Volkert would not leave.

Authorities say Volkert was standing in the doorway when Murphy shot him. Murphy was taken into custody on Monday and is now facing charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is currently being held on a $2 million cash-only bond.

Friends and loved ones described Volkert as a veteran who proudly served his country. His death has left those who knew him heartbroken, as they remember his service and mourn the tragic circumstances that cut his life short.
