The Lexington County community is mourning the loss of Luther Vern Price, 74, of Gilbert, South Carolina, who tragically died in a house fire on September 14, 2025.
Emergency crews were called shortly before 8 a.m. to the 300 block of Schofield Road, just off Highway 1. Firefighters from Lexington County Fire Service responded quickly to contain the blaze. After the fire was brought under control, Price’s body was discovered inside the home. Despite the efforts of first responders, he could not be saved.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the precise cause of death. Authorities are investigating the fire, though it is not yet clear whether Price died directly from the flames or from related causes, such as smoke inhalation. Multiple agencies—including the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington County Fire Service, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the ATF—are actively involved in the investigation to determine how the fire started and whether any foul play or negligence was involved.
Neighbors expressed shock at the tragic incident, noting that house fires in the area are relatively rare. Officials emphasize that older residents are particularly vulnerable in such emergencies, highlighting the importance of smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and established escape plans.
