YORK COUNTY, Pa. – A deadly shooting in North Codorus Township left three law enforcement officers dead and two others wounded on Wednesday afternoon as they were apparently serving a warrant, authorities confirmed. The suspected gunman is also dead.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris said the surviving officers were rushed to the hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition. “There are simply no words I can offer to assuage the grief that this community has experienced,” Paris said during a briefing.
The incident began at around 2:10 p.m. when 911 calls reported gunfire in the area. Witness Dave Miller, who was driving nearby, said he pulled over to allow police vehicles to pass and then heard what he described as “continuous gunfire.” He recalled seeing officers at a barn and said he heard nearly 30 shots ring out.
Emergency crews, including medical helicopters, responded quickly. A spokesperson for WellSpan York Hospital confirmed it was treating two individuals related to the shooting, both listed in serious condition. The hospital also implemented “enhanced security protocols” in response.
Gov. Josh Shapiro urged residents to follow law enforcement directions, while Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Attorney General Dave Sunday echoed calls for the community to avoid the area. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, were assisting, condemning the violence as “a scourge on our society and never acceptable.”
The Spring Grove Area School District briefly issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted just before 5 p.m.
As of now, the identities of the fallen officers and the suspect have not been released. The Pennsylvania State Police and multiple agencies are continuing their investigation into what led to the deadly gunfire.
