The rodeo world is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of a true icon, Joni James Smith, who passed away this morning. With her radiant smile, boundless energy, and lifelong devotion to the Western way of life, Joni was more than a former titleholder she was a beloved ambassador, trailblazer, and matriarch whose legacy will be deeply felt for generations.
An all-around cowgirl in her own right, Joni was the 1984 Idaho High School Rodeo Association All-Around Cowgirl. The four-sport varsity high school athlete earned her bachelorโs degree from Boise State University on a college and basketball scholarship, and was crowned Miss College Rodeo in 1987. She went on to become Miss Rodeo Idaho in 1989, and earned a masterโs degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Joni was crowned Miss Rodeo America 28 years after her mom, Karen Lavens James, took the same title in 1962. Joni dominated the 1990 Miss Rodeo America competition, winning the horsemanship, speech, appearance and personality portions of the pageant.
